Military Service Description
Michael Remo was drafted and enlisted into the United States Army on 1941-03-31. He was assigned to the 68th Coast Artillery which was sent overseas 1942-11-02. Remo and the 68th Coast Artillery Unit fought in the North African campaign. Eight months into his service in North Africa, he earned the Purple Heart as a Staff Sergeant. Following the North African campaign, he was transferred to the 19th Engineers, who were in Rome. The 19th Engineer Battalion participated in five amphibious landings and accompanied allied armies in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. The 19th Engineers were transferred to the Infantry. With this transfer, Remo became a member of the Fifth Army. He was discharged on 1945-06-28 after accumulating 104 points. At the completion of his military career, he had participated in six campaigns and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and Purple Heart.
Biographical Text
Remo married Stephanie Kuzmik on 1946-04-28 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. They had six children: Thomas, Dorothy, Donald, Kenneth, Lawrence, and Carol Ann. Remo worked as a carpenter. He was a member of a New City carpenters’ union, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 964 in New City, NY. He was also a member of Mahwah’s Volunteer Fire Company #1. He died on 1983-02-11 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. He was 67.
