James Bernard McElwain, Jr. was born in Tarrytown, NY, and was a Mahwah resident for 38 years.
He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, and worked as a systems analyst engineer for Singer-Kearfott in Little Falls. In 1971, McElwain was also a civil service qualifier in a competition to be the supervisor of data processing in Bergen County.
He was married to Claire Barton McElwain, and he had eight children.
