Biographical Text
Timothy Francis Xavier Herlihy was born in Hoboken, NJ. Before coming to Mahwah, he also lived in the towns of Jersey City and Hudson in New Jersey, and attended Dickinson High School in Jersey City. Soon afterwards, Herlihy would go on to fight in the Navy as part of World War II.
Upon his return home, he married Janet Kohnen, a fellow graduate of Dickinson High School. The two decided to buy land near Pulis Avenue in Mahwah, where they began building their family home in 1951, and then completed it in 1952; they had four children.
Herlihy worked as a construction welder for the Paterson local of the Plumbers and Steamfitter Union. The Ford Plant in Mahwah is a local spot where Herlihy did some of his work.
Meanwhile, his wife Janet found success as the first ever woman elected to the Mahwah Township committee in the year 1955!
It is also of note that Herlihy was a leader of Fire Company 4 in Mahwah; in 1963, the firemen elected him to be the president of the fire company for a fourth term. He was also involved with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices - a labor union for plumbing and pipefitting industries, in the U.S. and Canada. In the latter part of his life, Herlihy finally moved out of state to Homestead, FL.
