Biographical Text

John Stokes was born in Franklin Lakes, NJ. His parents arrived in the United States six years earlier from Friesland, the Netherlands. Their surname was originally Stokje. The Stokes family lived in Wyckoff, NJ for 50 years and then moved to Mahwah. Aside from fighting in the Korean War, he presided over Stokes Dairy Farms, and was director of Jefferson National Bank and Clifton Savings and Loan. Stokes also supported the religious community, as the trustee and treasurer of New Brunswick Theological Seminary from 1988 to 1998, and the elder deacon and treasurer at Faith Reformed Church in Midland Park, NJ. Otherwise, he loved the Adirondack Mountains for various outdoor activities, and he spent time upstate at a family home at Lake Pleasant, NY. He was married to Gertrude Outslay and had four children.
