Military Service Description

John Hummer was drafted and enlisted into the U.S. Army on 1944-09-08 in Newark, NJ. Hummer was assigned to E Company, 114th Infantry Regiment. The 114th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the New Jersey Army National Guard. On 1945-04-22, Private First Class Hummer was hit by shrapnel from mortar fire while walking alongside a tank with E Company in Germany. The nerves in his brain had been hit. Hummer was diagnosed with post-traumatic encephalopathy (brain disease that alters brain function or structure). Hummer’s upper and lower extremities on his right side were paralyzed. After spending eight months in the Memphis VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN, Hummer was discharged from the hospital in December 1945. His injury resulted in a medical discharge from the Army in 1945. 

Biographical Text

John G. Hummer was born in Bavaria, Germany to George and Anna Hummer on 1926-05-05. The Hummer’s immigrated to America in 1929 and resided in Union City, NJ. He was employed at an embroidery factory on Henry St. in Union City, NJ. Hummer completed two years of high school when he enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He served until his discharge in 1945. He married Dorothy Lawson on 1948-05-08 in St. Louis, MO. The Hummer’s lived in Upper Saddle River, NJ. They had two sons: John Richard and James Edward. The Hummer’s moved from Fair Lawn, NJ to Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah, NJ in 1955. Hummer worked as a parts manager for the Short Line Transportation Company until his retirement. He was an active member of the Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River, VFW Post 4290 of New Mildford, and DAV Post 18 of Paterson. He was a life member of American Legion Post 171 in Fair Lawn. He died in St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, NJ on 1975-04-04. He was 48.
