Military Service Description

James Remo enlisted into the United States Navy on 1943-01-31. He originally enlisted in the Navy’s Construction Battalion. He completed “Seabee” training at a Virginia cantonment as well as boot camp at the United States Naval Training Center Bainbridge, Maryland. In June of 1943, he signed up for a six year period that was to be spent with the Regular Navy. In June of 1943, he was stationed at a naval station in Maryland In February of 1944, Remo completed a course at the Naval Radio School in Norton Heights, CT. He then reported to Norfolk, VA for assignment to active duty.

Seaman Second Class Remo was received on board the American ammunition ship USS
Nitro (AE-2) 1944-02-19. On 1944-05-01, he was promoted to radioman third class. On 1945-02-01, he was appointed radioman second class (T). In February of 1945, he was assigned to the ammunition ship USS Pyro, which was located near Pearl Harbor. He was received aboard the USS Oneida (APA-221) on 1945-03-26. In June of 1945, Remo participated in a V-12 Navy College Training Program at Princeton University. In 1946, he was attached to the USS Kearsarge (CV-33). In July of 1946, he was promoted to radioman first class. Throughout his Navy career, he participated in the landings at Normandy and Southern France. He also served in Japan and the Philippines. 

Biographical Text

James Peter “Jiggs” Remo was born on 1924-03-26 in Mahwah, NJ to John Sr. and Elizabeth Remo. His older siblings were: John Jr., Michael, Elizabeth, Andrew, Helen, and Marion. His two younger brothers were Charles and Robert. The Remo family lived on Meadow Avenue in Mahwah. While attending Ramsey High School, he was captain of both the football and basketball teams for the high school. He was also an All-State Performer for both sports. Remo was drafted and enlisted into the Navy in 1943. Elizabeth (Army Nurses Corps), Andrew (US Army), and Michael (US Army) also served in the military.

While still in the Navy, he married Carol Betty Powell on 1946-08-03. The Remo’s lived in Midland Park, Mahwah, and Emerson. They had four children: Bonnie, Wayne, Mary Sue, and James. After his career in the Navy, Remo owned his own laundry and cleaning delivery service. Remo and Carol divorced. Remo moved to Wyckoff, NJ in 1955. He remarried Judy D’Amico 1969-08-14. The couple had two children: Anthony and James. He was the director of the Wyckoff Recreation Commission and head of maintenance for the fields. He was also the head coach for the Wyckoff recreation football team and a past coach of the Wyckoff Connie Mack baseball team. He worked as a golf course superintendent for Wayne’s North Jersey Country Club for fifteen years. He was a member of the Golf Course Superintendent Associations as well as the St. Elizabeth’s R.C. Church in Wyckoff, NJ. He died on 1983-10-15 at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. He was 59.
