Biographical Text

George Chattaway was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1918. The Archer Memorial M.E. Church in Allendale, NJ, baptized him and his sister Helen Emily in 1931. In his childhood years, he lived on Oak Street in Ramsey with his family. His father, George, worked as an artist.

Chattaway worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps for six months in Keating, OR, and returned home in June 1939. Subsequently, he joined the Army in December 1939, and they stationed him at Governor's Island. In the Second World War, the Army stationed him in Iceland. He received a radiogram while deployed there when his son George Thomas was born. After serving 22 months in Iceland, he came home on furlough in July 1943. Chattaway returned to his new home in Suffern, NY, to his wife, Alice Cole, and his son before he reported to a post in Illinois with his wife. Following this move, he served 17 more months in Panama. On July 8, 1945, the Army honorably discharged Chattaway.

Later in life, the veteran worked as a brakeman for the Erie Railroad. Further on, he became a policeman for Sparta, NJ, and participated in a County College of Morris program where he pursued a professional degree in law enforcement.
