Military Service Description
Stephen Megles enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on 1942-12-15. As a private in January of 1943, he was assigned to the 11th Recruit Battalion at Parris Island, SC. In April of 1943, Private First Class Megles was stationed with Company A, Headquarters Battalion in Washington D.C. In July 1943, Corporal Megles was stationed with Company A, 1st Headquarters Battalion. In October 1943, he was enrolled as a student at the Quartermaster School at Camp Lejeune, NC. Quartermasters were responsible for providing supplies such as rations and clothing to troops as well as supervising stores and barracks. As a sergeant, he was stationed with Headquarters and Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 13th Marines enroute to the 5th Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Pendleton, CA in January of 1944. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Pendleton in April of 1944. In April 1945, Megles was stationed with the 1st Military Police Battalion, Fleet Marine Force in Guam, where he served as quartermaster.
Biographical Text
Stephen Megles was born to Michael and Bertha Megles on 1924-08-23 in the Megless family home on Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ. He was the youngest of five. His older siblings were: Anna, Mary, Eleanor, and Andrew. Megles gained enough credits to graduate early from Ramsey High School and joined the Marines in 1942. He attended the June 1943 Ramsey High School graduation ceremony in his Marine uniform. After his military career, he met Yolanda DePatto, who he would marry on 1946-09-15. The couple had two children: Stephen M and Louise. He worked at Abex Corporation as a mechanic until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church and VFW Post #71, both of which are located in Mahwah. He died on 2001-12-26. He was 77.
