Military Service Description

William Ostrowski enlisted into the Army 1943-03-09. As a private first class, he was stationed in Fort Jackson, SC in August 1943. He then attended Beloit College, WI, as a member of the 95th Training Detachment. At Beloit, he participated in a course that included academic studies as well as elementary flying training. At the completion of this course, he became an aviation cadet and was sent to an Air Force School for further training. After this training, he was stationed at the Santa Ana Army Air Base in CA in March of 1944. In June of 1944, he was stationed in Tucson, AZ. He also spent time in Guam. He was discharged on 1946-02-25. 

Biographical Text

William Joseph "Bill" Ostrowski was born on 1920-03-29 in Mahwah, NJ to Peter and Adela Ostrowski. The family lived on Island Road in Mahwah. He had three siblings. He had one older brother John, and two younger siblings: Ann and Anthony.The Ostrowski family lived on Island Road, Mahwah. Ostrowski was an avid artist. In 1938, he had his own art exhibit that featured oil paintings of Mahwah landscapes as well as a portrait of a local girl. His artwork included oil paintings, sketches in pencil, ink, and chalk, and pastels. He had been successful in numerous art contests and received multiple requests for his work both locally and abroad. A portrait of Chief Nanawit, completed around the 1970s, is on permanent loan at the Nanuet Public Library. Ostrowski, a flying enthusiast, had a charter membership in the Ramapo Valley Aeronautical Association. He attended highschool at St. Luke’s in Hohokus as well as Ramsey High School. He began working for American Brake Shoe Company in 1938. In 1939, he was one of five chosen to receive a free course in commercial art at the Federal Schools Inc, located in Minneapolis, MN. Ostrowski served in the Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946. He married Lottie Kuhn 1958-09-06 at St. Anthony’s Shrine Church. The Ostrowski’s had two children: Peter and Jean. The couple were married for 33 years until William’s death. Ostrowski worked as an inspector for Abex Corporation (previously American Brake Shoe Company), until retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Tribune Council Knights of Columbus in Pearl River (NY), Nanuet Senior Citizens No. 2, and St. Anthony’s Church in Nanuet. He died 1991-07-16 at Nyack Hospital. He was 71.
