Stephen Suleski enlisted into the United States Navy on 1943-02-01 in Newark, NJ. Suleski was received aboard USS Hopping (DE-155) on 1943-05-21 as a seaman second class. He had previously been stationed at the Naval Training Station, Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Va. USS Hopping (DE-155) was a Buckley-class destroyer. In 1944, Suleski and the USS Hopping made nine convoy crossings from America to England with supplies for the war. On 1943-11-01, Suleski was promoted to seaman first class. In late 1944, USS Hopping was converted to a Charles Lawrence-class high speed transport. USS Hopping (APD-51) took part in the Battle of Okinawa. Now a coxswain, Suleski was responsible for the operation of the boat, its steering, and controlling the throttle and engine speed. In May 1945, Suleski was struck by shell fragments in his right leg, an injury that awarded him the Purple Heart. On 1945-05-25, Suleski was transferred to USS Crescent City (APA-21) for treatment. He was received aboard five days later. On 1945-06-04, he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Base Hospital No. 18 in Guam. After recovering from his injury, he returned to USS Hopping on 1945-08-15. On 1945-10-19, he was transferred off the USS Hopping for his discharge from the Navy.

Stephen John “Steve” Suleski was born on 1924-02-06 to Bolesław “William” and Władysława “Lottie” Suleski in Mahwah, NJ. He had six older siblings: Stanley, Wanda, Joseph, Alexander, Adam, and Henry. He had one younger brother: Anthony. The Suleski family lived on Railroad Avenue. Stephen worked for Wright Aeronautical in Caldwell, NJ. Suleski served in the US Navy between 1943 and 1945. After the Navy, he was employed with Suffern Distributors until his retirement. He was a parishioner and Minister of Hospitality at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Mahwah. He was also an exempt member of Mahwah Fire Department Company #2, and a member of Mahwah VFW. Suleski died on 2011-09-29. He was 87.
