Biographical Text
Murray Kashtan was drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1957. He went to radio communication school at Fort Reily, Kansas. With Top Secret clearance, he learned to use hand held field phones and PRC10 backpack phones, and climb telephone poles to facilitate communication from combat situations to the top brass field officers. He served for 18 months in Germany.
On his discharge in 1959, he married his high school sweetheart and settled in Waldwick. They had two children and then built a home in Mahwah. He worked as an electrician, graduated from Montclair State College, and then became an electrical instructor at Bergen County Vocational School in 1974.
He joined the Mahwah Fire Department in 1974 and volunteered for about 45 years. "Mahwah is very special to me and has been a tremendous influence in my life. Watching my children and grandchildren grow up in this town has brought me years of joy."
