John Wood lived at 5 Long Avenue in HoHoKus Township in what today would be considered West Mahwah. He was born in Georgia, where his parents were also from. He married Jesse Wood, a woman who was born in New York City to Scottish immigrants. Outside of serving in the Spanish-American War, he worked as a painter.
