Military Service Description

Andrew Remo was drafted and enlisted into the United States Army on 1942-10-06. He spent his military career serving with the Caribbean Command as a member of a Detached Enlisted Men's List (DEML) Detachment in Puerto Rico. His service in the Caribbean area began in November of 1942. He spent time at Fort Brooke, a post in Puerto Rico. During his service in Puerto Rico, he met First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt when she visited in 1944. During this time, Remo served in a headquarters detachment. As captain of a DEML quintet, Sergeant Remo won a Post basketball title in March of 1945. The Headquarters Antilles Department announced his promotion to First Sergeant in 1945.

Biographical Text

Andrew Charles “Andy” Remo was born on 1918-10-29 in Mahwah, NJ to John Sr. and Elizabeth Remo. The Remo family lived on Meadow Avenue in Mahwah. John Jr., Michael, and Elizabeth were his older siblings. His younger siblings were: Helen, Marion, James, Charles, and Robert. Remo, Michael, Elizabeth, and James all served in the military and earned the nickname, “The Fighting Remo’s.”  Remo was known locally as a Ramsey High School star basketball and football player. Prior to the war, he worked at Ramapo Water Gardens. In 1938, he became a member of Mahwah Fire Department Company No. 1. He married Gloria Huebner on 1940-10-20. Their daughter, Anne Marie was born in 1941. He was drafted and enlisted into the United States Army in 1942. In 1946, he became a member of the Ramsey Rod and Gun Club. Andrew and Gloria divorced in 1948. Remo remarried Emma Heddy in 1952. They remained married until her death in 1986. The Remo’s moved to Maine. Andrew died on 2002-02-08 in Maine. He was 83.
