Military Service Description

Anthony Janosko was drafted and enlisted into the United States Army on 1941-08-11. He completed basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ before being sent to the Coast Artillery Replacement Center at Camp Wallace, TX in September of 1941. Camp Wallace was a training center for anti aircraft units. After training, Janosko was sent overseas. He was returned to America on the USS Thomas Jefferson. He arrived in San Francisco, CA on 1945-11-11. Janosko was discharged from the Army as a corporal. 

Biographical Text

Anthony Stephen Janosko was born on 1919-01-07 in Mahwah, NJ to Paul and Bertha Janosko. He was the second child of four. He had one older brother, Paul and two younger sisters, Margaret and Helen. The Janosko’s lived on Brook St. in Mahwah. Janosko is a graduate of Ramsey High School. He was employed as a machinist at Vocational School Machinist Course in Paterson, NJ. 

After his service, he lived on Brakeshoe Place, Mahwah. He worked as a salesman in the restaurant and bar industry and later a business owner when he opened Central Liquors on South Central Ave, Spring Valley, NY in late 1960. Janosko was one of the several veterans who came up with the idea to institute a Mahwah VFW post in 1946. He was an active member in Mahwah VFW Post 7124. He held the following positions: chaplain (1950, 1951, 1954), county delegate (1954), senior vice commander (1947, 1948), and commander (1949). He was a member of the post’s softball, bowling and basketball teams. Janosko was also an active member of the Mahwah Democratic Club, serving as its treasurer (1949, 1954), and a co-chairman of publicity (1950). He was also a golfer who qualified for the 1963 Rockland County Open Golf Championship.

Janosko moved to Florida in the 1990s. He lived in North Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and West Palm Beach. Janosko passed away on 2011-12-24 at the age of 92.
