Military Service Description

John Micik enlisted into the Army on 1943-04-01. Micik served in Italy with the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division from 1943-1944. The 179th Infantry Regiment participated in the following Italian campaigns: Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Rome-Arno. Micik was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of an arm wound that he received in December of 1943. He was hospitalized from December of 1943 until January 1944. He spent a majority of his military career overseas. Micik also served with the 685th Port Co., AUS. He was discharged on 1945-12-30.

Biographical Text

John Micik Sr. was born on 1925-01-16 in Mahwah, NJ to Michael and Julia Micik. He had four older siblings: Mary, Helen, Michael, and Margaret. His two younger sisters were Nancy and Anna. He attended Ramsey High School but was absent for the June 1943 graduation ceremony. Micik enlisted into the Army in April of 1943 and was discharged in December of 1945.

He joined the Mahwah Police department in 1948. In 1964, he was one of the three line officers out of Mahwah’s sixteen member police force. He was also a volunteer fireman for Company 2 and the Masonicus Fire Department. Micik was a past president of PBA Local #79, past commander (1961-1962) and member of Mahwah VFW Post 7124, a member of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church of Mahwah, and a member of PBA Local #143. He married Florence Rozanski in October of 1949. The Micik’s had three children: Patricia, John Jr., and Dianna. Dianna was born after Micik died. Micik died on 1964-10-28 at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ due to an illness. He was 39.
