Military Service Description

Casimir Sawicki enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 1942-10-28. Throughout his Navy career, he served in both the Atlantic Theater and Pacific Theater. He was received on board the USS Nields (DD-616) on 1943-01-15 as a Seaman Second Class. The USS Nields participated in escort duty, transatlantic convoy duty, anti-submarine patrols, helped to screen Allied convoys, and guarded transports. On 1943-12-01 he was promoted to Seaman First Class. Sawicki was received aboard the USS O’Brien (DD-725) 1944-02-25. The USS O’Brien participated in patrol duty, escort duty, the Battle of Normandy, the Bombardment of Cherbourg, Battle of Luzon, air strikes against Tokyo, Iwo Jima, and the Bonin Islands, and the Invasion of Okinawa. In June of 1944, Sawicki was ranked as Gunner’s Mate Third Class. As Gunner’s Mate, Sawicki would have been responsible for the operation and maintenance of guided missile launching systems, underwater explosive weapons, the systems used to launch them, and gun mounts. He also would have worked with the mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. His last promotion was to Gunner’s Mate Second Class (T). In January of 1946, he was transferred to Camp Elliot, CA for his discharge. 

Biographical Text

Casimir Anthony “Casey'' Sawicki was born to Joseph and Angela (née Waligroski) Sawicki on 1923-07-09 in Mahwah, NJ. Friends also called him the “Polish Prince.” He had two older sisters: Mamie and Stella. Anna, John, and Bernice were his younger siblings. The Sawicki family lived on Island Road, Mahwah, NJ. In 1942, he was working for American Brakeshoe Co. Sawicki’s Navy career began in 1942 and ended in 1946. Sawicki married Grace (née Johnson) in July of 1949. The couple were married for 48 years until Grace’s death in 1997. The two had one son, Richard. Sawicki worked as a police patrolman in Mahwah, NJ. He also worked for Avon Products, Inc as a set-up mechanic until he retired in 1984. Sawicki lived in Largo, FL  in 2005. Sawicki died at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT on 2005-08-22. He was 82.
