He enlisted June 1, 1946 at the end of World War II, and was released December 23, 1951, during the Korean War.
Whittle married Irene Hauck at St. Luke's R.C. Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, on September 8, 1962. They had three children. At the time, Whittle worked as a district sales manager for Holes Company of Ohio. He owned various businesses throughout his life, such as Beltair Florists in Brooklyn, NY, Fastening Specialists Inc. in Waldwick, and Omega Enterprises Inc., of Ramsey, NJ.
In 1971, Whittle expanded into the political sphere, as he ran as an independent alongside Democrat James Angel in Mahwah for the Township Committee. They campaigned for nonpartisanship, planning and zoning/conservation, fair taxes, eradicating drugs, and a new relationship with Ramapo College. However, the incumbent Republicans won the election, and Whittle lost.
